canadianwild.ca Buffy Goes Out Smokin'

Rarely does a series finale live up to its hype. Famed series finales such as Seinfeld have continously have failed to live up to great expectations. Buffy: The Vampire Slayer a series that has lived past its prime appeared that it would suffer a similar fate. Buffy in its seventh season should have finished up in its 5th season. That series finale Buffy died and the following season she was brought back to life under questionable circumstances that turned me away from the show. But with the show nearing its end I decided to watch the final few episodes.

Why did I decide to give the serious another chance? Since I first saw the first few episodes I was hooked. What a great idea a hot blonde kicking ass in an entertaining show. In my opinion Buffy is up there with Seinfeld, the Simpsons, and the Sopranos as shows that are entertaining and intelligent and are far better than most movies.

Now why was the finale able to be a success? Everybody knew the show was going to be over. The last two seasons the show was on its last legs so they smartly decided to bring new characters in to end the series on a highnote.

First, the new villian that was brought in was called the first. This was a brilliant move because this villian's special power was that it had the power to turn into any dead person. This allowed numerous former characters to reappear. Plus this worked alot better than Seinfeld's finale were they brought back former characters but didn't have any clear plot which made the show all muttled up.

Second, it tried to explain more of the mythology behind the origins of the vampire slayer. It brought the potentials in who were girls who were pre-slayers. They did not have any special powers yet, but they were brought in to be trained. It was a bit confusing about why they were around because they were essentially useless. But a plot twist in the final episode would alter the rules of the "slayer", and there would no longer be just one chosen slayer. This surprising plot device was fitting and the series went out with a bang.
