Use the Paddle To Unite Canada

This hellish year of 2003 in Canada, all parts of this country have seen unforseen diasters that have required government funding. In Toronto local politicians whined and screamed when they didn't all they wanted for SARS. Newfoundland took even harsher action when they threatened to seperate from Canada because of the closing of fish stocks. Alberta was hit with BSE and Alliance MPs where asking for government handouts? Also Ralph Klein didn't want other provinces building a fire wall around Alberta beef and started using Canadian patriotism to end the fire wall. Then to cap off this year from hell fires are on the edge of Kelowna and a city of 100, 000 is threatened with extinction.

Usually diasters in Canada bring the country together, but this year diasters have torn the country apart as each region is comparing the amount of federal assistance they are receiving with other parts of the country. The reason it all started like this was because the first diaster started in Toronto (snicker). Most Canadians questioned at first if it was a diaster or just another Mel Lastman mistake that made it a diaster, like calling in the army to shovel the snow, and the garbage strike. All other diaster funding this year was comparing to SARS because many Canadians know Toronto gets special priviledges.

Canadian unity was first threatened because of the Iraq invasion. People who supported the government increasingly became more patriotic. While people who were against this war starting waving their provincial or American flags. What is a Canadian? Typically a Canadian is defined as somebody that is not American? But what if you support an American policy over a Canadian policy does that make you American?

No. We need to look why are two nations are seperate. There are the classical arguments that we support the monarchy and the English-French disputes that make us Canadian. But we can go further back. America's west was explored and conquered by cowboys and outlaws. While in Canadian folklore our land was discovered by the coers de bois. We first discovered this great land with the help of the canoe.

All major Canadian cities have a major river flowing through it. Canoeing and kayaking is a popular hobby that is far more popular in Canada than the US. Its time to take back our rivers and promote an activity that is essentially Canadian. To rediscover this great land we must turn to our Canadian wild. Wherever you live if it is Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, or Vancouver canoeing is an easily assessible sport that can be performed in any part of this magnificant land. To keep this country united let's take our paddles out and make some noise on our silent rivers.
