Stop Separtist Movements

Who will push for separatism first Ralph Klein or Bernard Landry? In Quebec it appears that the PQ will obtain another majority government, which will make another separatist referendum inevitable. On the other side of the country the Alberta PC's took the unusual step of making Alberta separatism a major plank of the party convention. These are not positive steps for the future of this country. The most disturbing case thus far is Alberta.

On March 12, 2001 a dark cloud blanketed this province. Ralph Klein won a landslide majority.

"Welcome to Ralph's world" and his "positive future", that the zombies unknowingly backed. It is unknown what policies and manifestos are included in his positive future. Western Separation could be one of them. When separatism resurfaced after the last federal election support was only around 8%. But with the recent support of Ralph Klein for this movement support has risen to 18%, but it drops off significantly in Edmonton with 12%. They claim their support is because of the gun registry, Kyoto, the wheat board, and the war in Iraq. But if you more closely it is mainly because of the support from Klein, and the Alliance. Also, Albertans put so much faith in Klein that if he pressed the issue they would blindly follow him.

Many people think by rejecting the option of pulling out of Canada that he was silencing separatism, but in fact he was actually providing some kindling to the unjust cause. Klein's statement was not an attempt to quash separatism, but an ultimatum to Canada. If the federal government rejects Klein plan to choose senators from a list given by the province, Klein will plan to hold a referendum on Alberta independence. Alberta's recent interest in foreign affairs is highlighted by Klein's statement on the war in Iraq, which in the words of Liberal leader Ken Nicol is like Alberta wants to be its own separate identity.

If Alberta separated, we would be breaking away from the world's most righteous country. It would be like the end of a dream. The demise of a country where people of different creeds, and cultures live together in harmony. Canada is the envy of the world. We don't tolerate poverty, despair, and don't want to abandon anybody. We work together, invest in social not military advancement, and when we travel around the world, we are recognized as the greatest nation in the world. It is a privilege to be part of Canada, and we should never take it for granted. The Charter of Rights, is our crowning achievement, and evidence that the government respects the rights of every citizen. The making of this country was considered impossible. We were founded on compromise, and mutual respect which is a much nobler way for the birth of a nation, than a violent revolution. This is a country proud to be multicultural, proud to be an international peacekeeper, and proud to be repeatedly recognized by the UN as the greatest country in the world to live, for the past 7 years in a row. Whatever the challenge has been we have triumphed. In the war of 1812, a larger american army tried to annex Canada, but we throttled them, and went to Washington and burned the White House down. We build a railroad connecting a vast country. We fought in both great wars, against counties with vaster populations, adapted to new technologies, and are globally competitive. There is nothing in this country that can't be done. But most important of all we've accomplished all of our goals with tremendous success, and integrity. Even burning the White House down shows integrity, because it shows we aren't afraid to stand up to the Americans. The Fathers of Confederation, asked for the impossible and we delivered. We triumphed in all of our challenges in the past, but western separatists want to destroy this legacy. Alberta needs a strong voice to oppose giving up. This province doesn't give up. Our first settlers battled the harshest conditions to grow crops, and prevailed. When it snows, we're not like Toronto, we don't have to shut down our cities, and wait for the army to clear the snow. We continue working hard whatever obstacle is placed in our path. The Edmonton Oilers were in danger of moving to a bigger city. We didn't give up, and never accepted that a city our size can't support an NHL team. When the "Center of the Universe" stole Curtis Joseph from us, we didn't give up. Tommy Salo came to the rescue, and is currently outperforming Cujo. The Oilers are here to stay, and are ready to make a strong charge for the Stanley Cup. Alberta, like the Oilers doesn't give up. For those of you who would want to separate and give up on Canada, you are not true Albertans. Canada is not perfect, but it can change.

This past election Albertans voted overwhelming for Ralph Klein, because they aren't aware of the damage Klein is doing to this province. If Ralph Klein decided tomorrow that Alberta, should become an independent nation, the naive voters of this province would follow him. His government's been in power for 30 years. The Alliance's election campaign was a complete disaster, and yet they were able to win Alberta. It looks impossible to stop western separation if Klein, and the Alliance decide to support it. The campaign would be run to attack the federal liberals, and they would say voting against separation would mean support for the federal liberals. What is needed is someone who is not of the liberal party to keep Alberta in Confederation.

Joe Clark, "Canada's one man army", defeated Trudeau, fought against the energy program, Meech Lake, and decided in 1998, to comeback, to save his party from the Alliance. He was told that he was too old, his party was too low in the polls, and there was no way he would ever win a seat in the heart of Alliance territory. He defied his critics, saved his party, and won his riding, and now is the most respected politician in Canada. Joe Clark would never consider western separation, and offers these words of hope for Alberta's place in Confederation,
"Alberta, ... will not drift away. Its instinct is to stay and fight, and Alberta's more aggressive attitude is worth analyzing, because it will continue to set the agenda for much of the west". What is needed a young vibrant leader to fight against separation.

So what can be done to fight this? The cause's greatest weakness is its gray hair. The most adamant supporters of Alberta separation are aging, and are lead by politicians who should be near retirement. Klein is approaching 60. The area where support can be gathered to resist an Alberta republic is the population that is under 40. But, the separatist supporters greatest advantage is that this group is often unmotivated to vote, or take an active political stance. This is often because they feel the issue doesn't concern them. But as history shows countries with independence revolutions often record turnouts, the Quebec referendum turnout percentage was in the 90s. This Klein strategy may backfire, and motivate a whole new class of people to vote, and defeat this government. So Ralph push separatism, and Albertans will give you the early retirement you deserve.

Albertans, don't give up, and if there was a succession vote, we will expose the power-hungry motives of the separatists. For those of you, who are considering voting for independence, because supporters will tell you, independence will mean that your taxes will be staying in Alberta, and you won't have to listen to the concerns of the other provinces. I'll tell you only this, just imagine an independent Alberta. If Alberta separates, it would start a domino effect along with Quebec, and other parts of the country becoming independent, ending the story of Canada.

And many years from now, what will tell your children and grandchildren, when they ask why you were part of the demise of Canada. The demise of Canada is championed by principles of greed, hatred, and division. What will you tell them? The truth? You would be filled with feelings of shame, and remorse; because voting to separate is rejecting principles of respect for others, equality, and righteousness. Now imagine yourself dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here, and tell Ralph Klein, that his motives are unsubstantiated. The story of Canada will not end, but Ralph Klein's story will end.
