The Canadian Imperialist's Dream

The Canadian tropics. It does sound good. We live in a cold country situated at the top of North America and experience some of the coldest temperatures in the world. Even though we are the second biggest country in the world are most southern point is Windsor, Ontario hardly known as a warm resort. Often we Canadians have joked why we cannot have somewhere warm to call home. The United States has Hawaii; the British have numerous islands throughout the world, and so do the French and Spanish.

But Canada is not an imperial power. We have never been a colonizing country and shouldn’t abandon our proud history of promoting self-determination throughout the world. The minute we start acquiring foreign lands is the day Canada ceases its status as a soft power and goes down the shadowy path of becoming imperialist.

Annexing the Turks and Caicos started in 1974 when an NDP MP proposed obtaining it because Canadians would finally have a warm-weather destination. The proposal quickly died, resurfaced in the 1980’s, and came into the public spotlight again when Global’s sole news program Global Sunday aired a piece about adding a Canadian tropics. Not surprising it was Global not the CBC or CTV that aired this piece.

Global is Canada’s version of FOX news. It even has FOX reporters file reports for Global. Global News is the only Canadian network with clear on-air biases. It favours a more privatized Canadian society, an obedient Republican-friendly government in Canada, and it recognizes the Israeli settlers’ claims to land that are not legally theirs.

Advocating a more imperialistic foreign policy for Canada would be a natural fit. They have been consistent. Any move to capture part of the Caribbeanwould alienate the rest of the region from Canada. Canada would lose its friendly status as a friendly nation. Rather as a distant occupier who would siphon off tourist and trade from their countries.

Nevertheless, most damaging of all would be the refugee crisis. Any person that lands in the Turks and Caicos would have the right to a refugee hearing. This would not be a positive thing considering Haitiis right next to the islands. In addition, would the islanders get the same benefits as the rest of Canadians? Would they receive universal health care or be ineligible for these benefits.

This country formed out of convenience because all of the colonies were right next to each other. Canada’s ten provinces are not scattered around the world. They have to be neighbours first, in order to form a relationship.

This is the 21st century and Canada needs are politicians to be progressive and forward looking. We need to promote self-sustainability, co-operation, and be careful not to alienate other nations in this world. We do not need politicians who have the views of 19th century sea captains. As a former colony, we should not seek imperialistic goals and promote independence not dependence.
