New Orleans's Man Made Nightmare

“God cannot be pleased” Rep. Elijah Cummings

"I have not heard a report of thousands of people in the convention center who don't have food and water." –Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff

Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of the city of New Orleans show when tragedy occurs in the US, America brings out its worst. It was a class 4 hurricane that hit New Orleans and they got off lucky because many feared a class 5 would hit the city. The Hurricane killed 50 and it looks the rest will die of negligence because America couldn’t or wouldn’t respond quickly. The US Army is stuck in a quagmire in Iraq and international help was needed. President Bush should have been working the phones but instead stubbornly refused help, and scoffed at the question in an interview saying America didn’t need help, and later said the US can be in Iraq and help the hurricane victims. Bush’s pride stopped him asking for help. If he did ask for assistance, most of the help would have arrived from nations who staunchly refused the war in Iraq. Kind of ironic.

"His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home. And every day she called him and said, 'Are you coming. Son? Is somebody coming?' And he said, 'Yeah. Mama. Somebody's coming to get you. 'Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. 'Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. 'Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. 'Somebody's coming to get you on Friday ... And she drowned Friday night. [Crying] And she drowned Friday night. Nobody's coming to get us. Nobody's coming to get us. The Secretary has promised. Everybody's promised. They've had press conferences. I'm sick of the press conferences. For God's sakes, just shut up and send us somebody." Aaron Broussard, President of Jefferson Parish

Here’s where Bush’s assistance could have come from and perhaps 10 000 lives could have been saved:

1. Canada

Canada would have been able to get help to the US the fastest because of our close proximity. Air lifts might have been able to arrive within six hours and the first ships and overland support would have arrived on the 5th day after the hurricane instead of just being allowed to enter the country. Also, I believe Canadian assistance is being restricted in order not to be more visible than US assistance. Canada could easily send RCMP and military police to relieve the overworked New Orleans forces.

"If you can imagine, people coming onto the plane without shoes, maybe a garbage bag with all their worldly possessions -- words cannot describe it." Air Canada chief flight attendant Frank Phillips

2. Australia and Japan

These two nations are well equipped to deal with hurricane related problems. Japan is on a fault line and regularly experiences tsunamis and has an emergency force ready to help. Australia like the US also has part of its country in the tropics. In the North it has extreme dry and wet seasons where roads are washed out, and sometimes air rescues are needed. Also Australian has experienced several horrendous hurricanes and its emergency response department is not inept like FEMA.

"When the tsunami struck Asia the international aid was quick and effective - Aceh province, the hardest hit and very remote had drops and aid workers within two days. But also the locals helped themselves and their neighbors, they looked after each other. Hundreds of Australian tourists were in the areas affected, they pitched in with the locals and were helped in return. But tonight on the news we hear of dozens of Australians lost in New Orleans. The US government refuses point blank to allow our own consulate officials or aid workers in. A women manages to phone her husband and children in Queensland - she was in the Superdome - her money and phone have been stolen, she'd been sexually assaulted. They haven't heard from her since." kuro5hin

"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job." President Bush, to FEMA director Michael Brown

3. EU

France and Germany two countries that stayed out of Iraq have a ready army available. After being ridiculed and insulted they could have help in America’s time of need. Also other nations like the UK, Italy, and Scandinavian countries (who have low-lying cities) all could easily overwhelmed America’s meagre response.

"Last night, we showed you the full force of a superpower government going to the rescue." MSNBC's Chris Matthews

4. Russia

Lastly and most important, Russia has the world’s second strongest airlift capability and could have flown EU supplies and forces into New Orleans. But like the Kirsk tragedy, both sides do not realize the COLD WAR IS OVER. Their pride is too strong and their willing to let their own die rather than ask for help from old foes.

"Considering the dire circumstances that we have in New Orleans, virtually a city that has been destroyed, things are going relatively well." FEMA Director Michael Brown

  5. The Rest

It appears almost everybody was ready for help. Tsunami effected countries were willing to offer financial assistance. Cuba was willing to offer doctors. The most ironic was Venezuela who is offered cheap oil to the US. Just two weeks ago, after Pat Robertson’s comments about assassinating Hugo Chavez, sparked a threat to limit US access to Venezuelan oil.

"I haven't heard that, because, for the last four days, I've been seeing dead bodies in the streets here in Mississippi. And to listen to politicians thanking each other and complimenting each other, you know, I got to tell you, there are a lot of people here who are very upset, and very angry, and very frustrated. And when they hear politicians slap – you know, thanking one another, it just, you know, it kind of cuts them the wrong way right now, because literally there was a body on the streets of this town yesterday being eaten by rats because this woman had been laying in the street for 48 hours. And there's not enough facilities to take her up. Do you get the anger that is out here?" CNN's Anderson Cooper

It wasn’t completely President Bush’s fault that the US wasn’t ready to respond. (Even though you disagree with the war in Iraq) But he could have asked for help. Initially, he relied solely on US military personal out of Iraq only 1-2 months ago. Instead thousands die. Kind of ironic that Saddam’s trial is just starting. Bush is responsible the death of 100, 000 Iraqi civilians, almost 2000 US soldiers, and over 10, 000 flood victims. How embarrassing is it that we can actually compare a leader from a democratic country and a dictator’s death toll?

"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees." President Bush

President Clinton faced impeachment because he had an affair. President Bush has sent US soldiers to an unnecessary war and is responsible for death of thousands because of a disastrous response plan. I don’t want to hear any complaining from any right-wing blow hearts because Bush is without a doubt the worst US President ever, and now compares to our bad leaders like Ivan the Terrible and Nero. (Who burned down Rome)

"We've got a lot of rebuilding to do ... The good news is — and it's hard for some to see it now — that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott's house — he's lost his entire house — there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch." (Laughter) President Bush

We’ve seen the pictures of people stranded and starving. They look like a scene out of Africa and the people also have the same skin colour. This is the same part of America wear the Confederate Flag is flown and instead of help their fellow black neighbours white residents returning home from Hurricane are loading up on guns to protect themselves from the starving black man. American responded quickly to rescue white people from the twin towers but didn’t want to rush to rescue poor black people. A commerical during the Live 8 Concert said that if 50, 000 people died a day in a major US city the G8 would move. It appears we were wrong it's more about location, there are other factors skin colour, your income, and if your going to vote for the party in power.  It’s not just the government’s fault it’s America’s fault too. It appears America’s going to send New Orleans refugees internationally as refugees. I haven’t seen Americans offering to house the survivors of the hurricane and countries like Canada, Europe, Japan, and even Mexico might have to accept US refugees. American refugees crossing the Mexican border is exactly like the scene in the movie Day after Tomorrow. The world is united in one message to America who is unwilling to help its needy:

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”
