The Slayer of The Extreme Right Belinda
Stronach was considered a long-shot to win the
leadership of the Conservative party. She's been labelled the Barbie
doll canidate, a power hungry billionaire, and an unproven politician
with no substance. But the latest polling on Conservative leadership
hopefull's has her placed in first place.The race appears now for her to lose. She is an extremely wealthy former CEO who now wants to serve the public. She's been criticized as being a puppet for corporate Canada. But Canada has had a wide variety of politicans who were wealthy before entering politics. This includes Paul Martin, Brian Mulroney, and Pierre Trudeau. Just because a politican is wealthy doesn't mean they are campaigning for corportate Canada. Often the most extreme right-wing politicans are not exuberantly wealthy, but are brainwashed by an ultra right-wing ideology and are funded by corportations that want tax cuts. It's possible for a rich person to have a social conscience. It appears that Belinda Stronach is the candidate that represents the old progressive conservative party. She supports gay marriage and is highlighting the problem of low female participation. On the right she is targeting expensive problems of the gun registry, an elected senate, lower taxes, and more military spending. Also she is a good public performer who can answer tough questions and is far more charismatic than Steven Harper will ever be. But her main weakness is her  approval of the war on Iraq. Refusing to
participate in the invasion of Iraq has proven to be a solid decision
because where are the alleged weapons of mass destruction? Also if she
is the centralist candidate she needs to target Paul Martin's social
spending record and choose specific programs to increase spending.
Belinda has the potential to succeed in Canadian politics. She has
never served as an MP but neither has Jack Layton. If Belinda Stronach
can become the Jack Layton of the right there will be a minority
