Cleopatra"Her (Cleopatra) character, which pervaded her actions in an inexplicable way when meeting people, was utterly spellbinding. The sound of her voice was sweet when she talked". Circo After this
election, another
problem that arose was lower female
representation in the Canadian parliament. North America lags far
behind other democracies for female representation in parliament. One
reason for that is the first past the post system. Its first past the
post philosophy reduces the value of every vote because not every vote
is equal and it favours men to win a riding. That is because men are
know to more feisty and women sometimes to have the urge to battle in
the dirty games of politics. With proportional representation, women do
not have to be engaged in the one to one battles of riding warfare but
instead would be re-elected on their party’s performance. In a recent survey by National Geographic they were so desperate do have a female from North America represented that they selected Kim Campbell as part of their list. The list was over-representative of females in general. Most notably Indira Ghandi made it instead of Mahatmas Gandhi. However, one woman who deserved to be on that list was Cleopatra. Cleopatra was
the most famous Queen of Egypt. She reigned from 51 BC to 39 BC.
Arguably, she was the most powerful women ruler of all-time. She not
only dominated affairs in her own country but also had influence in the
Roman Empire that was the greatest power of the world then. She had
relationships with the two most powerful men in Roman Empire, Julius
Caesar and Marc Anthony. Early on in her reign, she learned Egyptian
and was the first ruler in a while in Egypt not to speak Greek.
Furthermore, she also practised the religious customs and many began
viewing her as a Pharaoh. Her power and her generals ousted her in a
coup and made her brother sole ruler of Egypt who she married too and
sharing the throne. However, her misfortune drastically changed when Caesar’s army arrived in Egypt a few months later. She delivered a carpet the 54-year old Roman leader. When it was unrolled, he found the 22-year old former Queen in the carpet. They fell in love and Caesar returned Cleopatra to power. But in order to gain the throne Cleopatra had to marry another brother to rule. Caesar built a gold statue of her in the Temple of Venus in Rome, a great feet making her the first person other than a God to have a statue in that temple. Caesar produced one child with her but his relationship with the “foreigner” eventually led to Caesar’s assassination. She seduced Marc Anthony by sailing in with a ship of silver oars and purple sails. In addition, the ship was covered with so many roses that they could smell the sent before they could see the ship. Her Erotes fanned her and her handmaidens steered as she was dressed as Aphrodite, the goddess of love. This second big entrance paid off and Marc Anthony was star-eyed. Marc Anthony impregnated her three times, had her rivals killed, and she acquired new territory. However, she was not completely helpless. When Marc Anthony nearly lost a power struggle in Rome, Cleopatra gave him immense financial support to rebuild her army. Cleopatra let her power be known. "As surely as I shall yet dispense justice on the Roman Capital." However, this plagued Marc Anthony because people were concerned that Cleopatra was gaining influence over the Roman Empire. Marc Anthony killed himself when he heard Cleopatra was wrong but those reports were wrong. Cleopatra tried unsuccessfully to seduce Octavian and on August 10, 39 BC according to legend, she committed suicide from bite from an asp which represented divinity. Despite her importance in world history, much of her is a mystery. Was she beautiful or just an amazing seductress? Was she white or black? Did she love Caesar and Marc Anthony or did she just use them for ideas of world domination? The most amazing thing is that there has not been another leader like her. Sure, there have been mistresses who might have controlled nations behind the scenes but never anybody so visibly. Many women leaders have tried to play politics like a man’s game but have not succeeded. Man’s greatest weakness is female beauty. Many women are qualified to follow in the steps of Cleopatra because they are eye-candy and have the brains. What these women are lacking is the will, the persuasion, and the failure to seize power when opportunities have arisen. “What is often not associated with Cleopatra was her brilliance and her devotion to her country. She was a quick-witted woman who was fluent in nine languages, however, Latin was not one of them. She was a mathematician and a very good businesswoman. She had a genuine respect for Caesar, whose intelligence and wit matched her own. Antony on the other hand almost drove her insane with his lack of intelligence and his excesses. She dealt with him and made the most of what she had to do. She fought for her country. She had a charismatic personality, was a born leader and an ambitious monarch who deserved better than suicide.” Tour Egypt Related Rants: Belinda's Wild Rollercoaster Ride Why do chicks dig older guys The Slayer of The Extreme Right Sources: Biography Electronic Passport Tour Egypt canadianwild.ca Interactive: Your Chance To Rant |
