Vote Liberal (2004)

"Continental economic and security integration" with the U.S. as well as a "continental energy strategy" that should be broadened "to a range of other natural resources." Stephen Harper

Hey Canada,

For the first time in my lifetime it looks like were headed towards a minority government. It is near impossible to decide who will form the next government. All the polls taken have a huge margin of error because there are some national polls where under 1000 people have being polled. As the above quote states Canada’s sovereignty is at stake during this election.

The liberals dropped in the polls not because Canadians disagree with their ideology but because people are angry at the misspending of less then 1% of the total budget. Canada should vote as Joe Clark said for the lesser of the two evils. I believe people should vote for the party that support their positions on major policy issues. Canadians support the Kyoto accord, public healthcare, protection for minorities, and are against the Iraq war.

In these contentious issues the liberals, the bloc, the ndp, and the Green party support these issues. The conservatives are against these core Canadian values. Not much has changed since Stockwell Day ran the alliance to the ground. Joe Clark was mocked for not joining the Conservatives but why would he sit the same caucus as someone who was against his role as a foreign affairs minister in the freeing of Nelson Mandela.

"I don't think that, you know, anybody would argue that if Nelson Mandela was saying, you know, 30 years ago, that you should go around with matches and necklaces and strangle people or burn them out of their homes, that is not terrorism." Rob Anders

"Rob (Anders) is a true reformer and a true conservative. He has been a faithful supporter of mine and I am grateful for his work." Stephen Harper

"The danger in having sexual orientation just listed, that encompasses for example pedophiles. I believe that the caucus as a whole would like to see it repealed." Cheryl Gallant

They maintained senior critic positions after their remarks and could be in line for cabinet positions. Do Canadians want them reviewing national security files and giving them the responsibility of protecting ethnic minorities accused of being terrorists?

Stephen Harper is not a politician either with strong integrity. People thought he was a man without charisma but he has deceived us during this election. He is behaving like a Canadian Prime Minister but his past opinions reveal his distaste for Canada. After the election, Canadians will be disturbed when the mask comes off the former Bildberg invitee who will enact policies driven by extreme right-wing beliefs and destroy the Canada built by our first 21 Prime Ministers. If Stephen Harper was Prime Minister Canadian troops would be trapped in Iraq, our healthcare system would be less assessable, and our flag would be pummelled by mud in the rest of the world due to his desire to become more integrated with United States. Here is what Stephen Harper has said about Canadian beliefs.

"I think it's a typical hidden agenda (gay marriage) of the Liberal party... They had the courts do it for them, they put the judges in they wanted, then they failed to appeal -- failed to fight the case in court... I think the federal government deliberately lost this case in court and got the change to the law done through the back door."

But don’t say he has a hidden agenda.

"It's past time the feds scrapped the Canada Health Act."

"You have to remember that west of Winnipeg the ridings the Liberals hold are dominated by people who are either recent Asian immigrants or recent migrants from Eastern Canada; people who live in ghettos and are not integrated into Western Canadian society."

"Thank you for saying to our friends in the United States of America, you are our ally, our neighbour, and our best friend in the whole wide world. And when your brave men and women give their lives for freedom and democracy we are not neutral. We do not stand on the sidelines; we're for the disarmament of Saddam and the liberation of the people of Iraq."

Therefore, why are the liberals better then what’s left? The Bloc and NDP want the clarity act revoked and a yes vote to Quebec independence by only a few hundred votes could destroy the country despite the preceding referendums where Quebeckers voted to stay in Canada. The NDP won points with me by taking a stand against missile defence. However, Jack Layton shocked me during the debate when he criticized Paul Martin for hiding behind the charter and not allowing minority rights to be subjected to majority approval. This is the first time I ever heard a self-professed “social democrat” attacking the idea of having human rights enshrined into the Charter. As far as voting for the Greens, I just am not that disconnected from the political process that I want to vote for the protest party. Yes, environmental decisions need to be discussed more but they have the lowest quality nominees running of the major parties and no experience governing.

Canadians are mad at the liberals. I am one of them. Paul Martin made a mockery of his open contested riding proposal by using it to rid him of Sheila Copps and appoint candidates who were going to lose their nomination. He fumbled the sponsorship scandal by failing to find out what happened and heightening its importance that caused his support to plummet. Nevertheless, Paul Martin is the greatest finance minister this country ever had, he has great political lineage, and has won the support of Bono by forgiving third world debt and coming through with money for the fight against aids. As a Canadian, I support this and I want an individual like this to be the Prime Minister.

Stephen Harper looks at the world differently. He does not share the globalist vision of Canadians because he is a continentalist. As Prime Minister, he would silence any criticism of the US because he does not want to get a phone call from Condolezza Rice. His view on friendship is staying mute and not speaking up when your friend is driving towards a cliff. Harper’s simplistic view of US-Canada relations is primarily based on his infatuation of America’s economic power. However, if the US is crippled by another terrorist attack, what good is their trade. Unfairly Stephen Harper is now being compared to Brian Mulroney. They both adore the US but when push comes to shove Brian Mulroney did stand up to the United States when he had to. Like Jean Chretien who said no to Iraq, Brian Mulroney said no to Star Wars. Unlike Stephen Harper, Brian Mulroney values international law. He appointed Stephen Lewis as his UN ambassador and signed the UN Declaration on the rights of the child. Many nations like the US refused to sign this document because it prohibited sending soldiers under the age of 18 to war, prohibited the death penalty against minors, and stated that the signing nation must strive to reduce child poverty. Harper has not stated yet if he plans to send a letter stating he wants to un-sign this document as he does with Kyoto. The United States allows soldiers as young as 16 to be sent to war. Would Harper send teenagers who are not allowed to vote to war? Myron Thompson in his opposition to the Young Offender’s Act stated he considers 10 years old an appropriate age to start serving jail time. Would any conservative member propose a bill to reinstate capital punishment for youth like the United States? Stephen Harper has never once stood up to the US. Paul Martin has. Yesterday on an hour-long interview on CBC, he called US agricultural subsidies criminal. It is not Canada’s place to be on its knees in US-Canada relations.

As a young Canadian, I am a target of Stephen Harper. When tax cuts are talked about to give Canadians more spending power, more education funding is never talked about for giving more spending power to lower income youth. Furthermore, when the controversial memo stating Paul Martin was a supporter of child porn, they blamed its title on a couple of over-caffeinated youth. I will not become a scapegoat in a Stephen Harper government. I will be voting liberal because I do not want Stephen Harper to make history for becoming Canada’s most right-wing Prime Minister of all-time.

Recently, I received my Canadian passport. It is not just a travel document but is also a symbol of the country you are part of! Americans often fly Canadian flags on their backpacks when travelling because they are ashamed of their international record and recognized as being from a beacon of international hope rather as an arrogant American. I hope I never will have to lie about which country I belong to because of my leaders.

For canadianwild.ca I am Dave.
