Merger Limits Conservatives to Third Party

Originally there was promise for the Conservatives as they agreed to merge. It appeared both parties would be a stronger single entity but the Alliance's rejection of Red Tories could limit the Conservatives to receive under 40 seats. The merger was intended to make a bigger tent party but it has transformed into just a right-wing party that will never achieve power. Even if both parties votes are added together they still are less then the total votes of the liberals. It was hoped that when the two parties merged that they could form a powerful political party that would have the momentum and steal votes from the liberals.

But this new conservative entity can't even get influential progressive conservatives to join it. It appears all the red tories are ready to leave this party. The loss of Joe Clark, Andre Bachand and others such as Scott Brison who plans to leave if Steven Harper becomes the leader will guarantee a win for Paul Martin. The Red Tories are a political force that should not be ignored as a small group of David Orchard followers. The only way the Conservatives will ever gain power is if they can capture more of the political centre. But the Alliance thinks they should focus solely on the political right and use right-wing media outlets to force Canadians to be governed by pro-American, corporate tax cutting, racist bigots. Everybody is making a big issue over the recent anti-gay remarks but why is Rob Anders still in the party after he accussed Nelson Mandela as being a terrorist. Why would Joe Clark want to sit in the same party as him when he worked vigoursly to free Mandela?

It is impossible to guess where John A. MacDonald would be on the political spectrum if he was alive today. But he would have been in the Red Tory mould. Why? He fought to have the railroad built and rejected calls for unnecessary tax cuts to build this country. More importantly he worked hard to form a Canadian identity and was weary of American penetration. This new conservative party is too friendly to the Americans and Canadians should never have to apologize to Donald Rumsfeld.

If this new conservative party will adopt Reform-Alliance policies and ideas the Liberals will form the government, and the NDP will become the official opposition. The conservative party would be better if Preston Manning was involved because he stressed more democratic accountability. An elected senate, and more accountable government were his major proposals but that changed since Day and Harper took over. Canadians don't want a flat tax, closer American-Canadian intergration, and anti-immigrant policies being implemented. Canada needs a creditable alternative to Paul Martin that is not a right-wing ideologue that chooses to take the right-wing side issue on ever issue and ignore the facts.

The destruction of the Progressive Conservative party will not limit the House of Commons to three parties. The PC's had the opportunity to reject the Alliance proposal and could have said that the Alliance would be sinking identity. They should have fought the Alliance and kept their party intact. There is a sizable amount of Red Tory support who do not support liberal or NDP policies. David Orchard has already talked of forming a new party. Even though Joe Clark said he is retiring there is still political lineage and Canada could use a female political leader. How about Catherine Clark becoming the new leader.
