Peter's Power Pull So what the
hell happened last Saturday in
Toronto? I'm still, along with many others, are still asking that
question. It least they (the PC'ers) made an interesting convention
last week, but probably for the wrong reasons. This is the only
leadership convention that I have seen where the party lost momentum
and focus after the new leader was elected. Even Stockboy Day had some
momentum before he crashed and burnt. Dave was right (for once) in his
little rant, Peter MacKay put power over principle. For those of you that don't know (which is most) Peter MacKay and David Orchard were the polar opposites in this leadership race, excluding the lunatic fringe candidates that maybe got 3 or 4 votes. Peter is a fiscal and social conservative, who has some controversial opinions on touchy subjects like his anti-abortion stance, is opinions about homos, and capital punishment. He was accused in this whole campaign (and his career) for flip-flopping on issue depending on what time of day it was and what part of the country he was in. He was caught red-handed a few times during this campaign with that. The other candidates at least which are David Orchard, Jim Prentice, and Scott Brison (who I supported) stuck to their guns. David Orchard is
really a red
with a blue coat on. Many people,
including the dippers themselves think he should be in the NDP. David
has made a career on his stance against free trade. One of the few
feathers still in the PC's cap is free trade. Many people, including
myself, wonder what the hell he is doing being in this party. He ran
for the leadership in 1998 against Joe Clark. The party was extremely
week at the time, and he attempted a hostile takeover with his
followers. They basically view him as a cult icon, and will take a
bullet for him. They sound like they have been brainwashed, and if you
ever hear their speeches, you would swear you're at a commie party
meeting at the old union hall. Give Dave credit though, he did get a
victory out of the jaws of defeat. He knows he can't win the
leadership, but he had enough delegates to decide who wins, and he got
what he wanted. This outcome
has really hurt
the party. If Peter would have pushed hard
and try to get people on his side, instead of the take the low road and
just rest on what he had and hope people would just go to him for the
hell of it, I wouldn't be typing this right now. The things I stated
about Peter before are the very reasons I didn't support him. I saw
right through the smoke and mirrors he put up during this campaign, and
I proved to a lot of people in the party that my gut feelings I was
saying about him were right. I just hope guys like Scott Brison and Jim
Prentice stay in the party. They are smart, professional guys, and they
are good people on top of it. I know because I have met them
personally. I guess not having that lawyer, son of a politician
mentality hurt them in the end. I can go on and on about this, but what happened has happened and we have to live with it. I'm still gonna be behind this PC party. I didn't join the party because Joe Clark was leader (*but for Joe Clark's daughter, she's hot), and I'm not gonna leave cause Peter MacKay is now. Be careful what you wish for Peter, you might just get it. The ball is in his court now, lets see what he can do. So to summarize, I think it is bull shit what happened. the candidates: Peter MacKay (Seein' Red) David Orchard (The PCPC, I thought this was the CCCP?) Jim Prentice (Careful, you know what people from Calgary do to commies) Scott Brison (Too bad, he really got the short end of the stick, no pun intended, really) Catherine Clark (Catherine Martin if I had my way) looking good as usual.
